Home entry step installation is part of Safety & Accessibility. For hand support, see handrail installation; for wider accessibility planning, compare mobility and aging-in-place modifications.
What Home Entry Step Installation Covers
Entry-step work can add or replace suitable steps at a doorway or transition where the height difference needs a defined walking surface. Total rise, available landing space, drainage, surface condition and the doorway threshold all affect the design.
A small freestanding step and a permanent exterior stair are different scopes. The request should show the height, site and intended configuration before materials are selected.
Before the Work
Photograph the doorway from inside and outside, including the landing, existing steps and surrounding grade. Measure the vertical rise and the available area in front of the door.
Note water flow, uneven concrete, loose decking or other surface problems around the entry. If a handrail is also desired, include that in the initial request.
What Can Change the Scope
Total rise, number of steps, landing space, exterior exposure, foundation or deck attachment, drainage and the need for rails can change the project.
A larger permanent stair or landing may involve different requirements than a small transition step. Existing structural or site problems should not be hidden under a new step.
What to Send With Your Request
- Wide photos of the entry and surrounding area.
- Vertical rise from grade or landing to threshold.
- Available width and depth for the step area.
- Photos of existing surfaces plus any desired rail location.
Describe whether the main goal is replacing a damaged step, reducing a difficult transition or creating a new entry step.
Common Questions
Can one extra step be added to an existing entry?
Possibly, but the full rise, existing stair geometry and landing space need to work together rather than adding a step in isolation.
Should a handrail be planned at the same time?
If hand support is part of the goal, it is useful to plan the step and rail together so mounting and clearances can be coordinated.
