Design-Build Planning

A Deck Is More Than a Surface of Boards

In Los Angeles, a deck may sit on a flat backyard, extend from a second floor, bridge a hillside, protect a roof membrane or surround a pool. Those conditions change foundations, framing, connections, drainage, railings, stairs and permits. A useful estimate therefore begins with the property rather than a generic price per square foot.

California Decks plans the whole outdoor space: how people leave the house, where furniture fits, which views should remain open, how stairs reach the yard, where water drains and which components will need future access. Finish material is selected after those practical questions are understood.

California Decks specializes in exotic hardwood and complex elevated work, with additional services for composite systems, structural repair, replacement and projects throughout Los Angeles and Southern California.

Process

A Clear Path From Idea to Finished Deck

Every step below contains the actual decisions needed to move the project forward. There are no decorative empty blocks.

Project Definition

Confirm the address, intended use, deck type, approximate size, material direction and whether an existing structure must be repaired or removed.

Site and Structure Review

Review grade, access, door elevations, framing, drainage, foundations, roof conditions and the constraints that affect construction.

Design and Preconstruction

Develop the layout, compare materials, define railings and stairs, and identify drawings, engineering, permits, fees and outside trades.

Construction and Closeout

Complete demolition, foundations, framing, decking, railings and details in the required sequence, including inspections where applicable.

Materials

Ipe, Other Hardwoods or Composite?

Ipe Decking

Dense natural hardwood with fine grain. It requires predrilling, correct ventilation and a choice between periodic color maintenance and natural silver-gray weathering.

Other Exterior Hardwoods

Species differ in color, density, movement, grade and availability. Selection should be based on the actual product and exposure rather than a generic hardwood label.

Composite and PVC

Manufactured systems reduce routine refinishing, while heat, expansion, framing flatness and manufacturer-specific installation remain important.

Repair or Rebuild

Evaluate the Structure Before Covering It

Loose railings, soft boards, movement and stains at the house connection can indicate different problems. Localized damage may support a focused repair; widespread framing deterioration, inadequate connections or repeated failures may make complete replacement more responsible.

New surface boards should not be installed until the existing frame is checked for condition, spacing and suitability for the selected material. This is particularly important when changing from wood to composite or rebuilding an elevated deck.

Questions About Building a Deck in Los Angeles

What deck types do you build?

Backyard, hillside, second-story, rooftop, poolside and custom decks, plus replacement, repair, railings, stairs and pergolas.

Do you work with Ipe and composite decking?

Yes. The choice is made after considering exposure, appearance, maintenance, heat, framing and the complete installed system.

Do decks require permits?

Requirements depend on the address and scope. Elevated, attached, hillside, rooftop and structurally altered decks commonly need additional review.

How is an estimate prepared?

The estimate should account for site access, demolition, structure, decking, railings, stairs, coordination and permit-related items rather than square footage alone.
