Handrail installation belongs to Safety & Accessibility. For stair structure work, see stair installation and repair; for exterior entry access, review home entry step installation.
What Handrail Installation Covers
Handrail installation can add or replace a graspable rail along a suitable stair, step or passage. The stair geometry, rail length, wall or post construction, mounting points and transitions at the ends need to be considered together.
A new rail does not correct loose, uneven or structurally damaged stairs. Those issues should be addressed as stair repair before the handrail is treated as the only needed improvement.
Before the Work
Photograph the full stair or step run from top and bottom, including both sides, landings and existing rails. Measure approximate run length and number of steps.
Provide product information if a rail has been selected. Show the wall or posts where mounting is expected and note loose finishes, damaged trim or other obstructions.
What Can Change the Scope
Wall construction, stair turns, landings, rail returns, exterior exposure, existing posts and the condition of the stairs can change the installation.
If the preferred side lacks suitable mounting or the stair itself needs repair, the project may need additional carpentry or a different railing configuration.
What to Send With Your Request
- Wide photos of the complete stair or step run.
- Number of steps and approximate rail length.
- Photos of mounting walls or posts.
- Product link or rail dimensions if selected.
If support is especially important at a landing or transition, show that area separately in the photos.
Common Questions
Can a handrail be added to an existing stair without changing the stair?
Often, when the stair is sound and suitable mounting is available. Damaged or unstable stairs should be addressed first.
Can the handrail go on either side?
The preferred side can be discussed, but wall construction, clearances and the actual stair layout may influence final placement.
