Attic Stair & Attic Door Installation: What the Service Covers
An attic access project may involve a hatch alone or a hatch with an integrated stair or ladder. As part of our doors and windows services, the installation is defined by the selected unit and the opening that will support it.
The rough opening, ceiling height, framing and exact stair or hatch model must work together. A replacement unit should not be assumed to fit an existing opening by name alone.
Options, Sizes or Configurations
A hatch-only unit provides access through an opening; a folding or sliding stair also needs a clear operating path and landing space below. Compare those requirements before ordering. The dimensions of the closed door alone do not establish that the stair can extend in the room.
Existing Conditions and Preparation
Photograph the full opening, frame, hardware and any damaged or binding areas. Add measurements where fit or clearance matters, and provide the product model, manual or material details when a specific item is being installed or replaced.
Describe the current problem and the result you want. Existing damage, repeated failure or an underlying condition should be identified before new finish work or hardware conceals it.
Take photos only from safely accessible positions. Show nearby doors, lights and furniture below the opening, and provide known framing information without removing ceiling material or climbing into an unsafe attic.
Installation / Construction Process
The plan confirms the model's opening and support requirements, then separates installation into a suitable existing opening from enlarging or relocating that opening. Changes to framing, concealed services or surrounding ceiling finishes need assessment and an explicit scope before the unit is fitted.
Alignment, Connections and Final Checks
Checks should include the specified attachments, hatch closure and the full opening and landing arrangement for a stair unit. A hatch that closes neatly does not prove that the ladder's support or extension is correct. Retain the selected model's instructions and use limits.
Related Services and Scope Boundaries
A room door is a different installation handled by general door installation and repair. For an attic hatch with a localized handle or latch issue, door handle and hardware installation may be relevant, but it does not replace assessment of an integrated stair mechanism.
What Affects the Quote
Opening size, ceiling height, framing condition, model, access above and below, old-unit removal and finish repairs affect the quote. A hatch-only replacement and an installation requiring a new stair opening involve different work.
A short description of what is wrong now and what you want to change is enough for the first review.
FAQ
What extra space does a pull-down stair need compared with a hatch?
It needs the model-specific opening sweep and floor landing space as well as a suitable ceiling opening. Nearby doors and furniture can interfere even when the closed hatch fits. Check the complete operating dimensions before choosing the unit.
Can a replacement stair fit the old opening without modification?
Possibly, if the exact model matches the opening, ceiling height and support conditions. The existing name or nominal size is not enough. Any enlargement, framing change or relocation should be identified separately.
Send the stair or hatch manual and photos of the opening to discuss the installation.
