What Garbage Disposal Installation & Repair Covers
A disposal request can involve replacing an existing unit, installing a compatible new unit or diagnosing a problem such as leaking, jamming, unusual noise or failure to run. The sink opening, mounting assembly, drain layout and power connection all affect the scope.
A leaking sink or drain, damaged wiring, a failed switch or a problem elsewhere in the drainage system may be separate from the disposal itself. The request should describe the symptom rather than assuming the unit is the only cause.
Before the Work
Photograph the area below the sink, including the disposal, drain pipes, dishwasher connection and power arrangement. If replacing a unit, provide the existing and proposed model numbers when available.
Note whether the unit is hardwired or uses a cord and outlet, whether a wall or air switch controls it, and where any leak appears. Do not reach into a disposal or attempt to free a jam while power is connected.
What Can Change the Scope
Sink and flange compatibility, cramped cabinet access, corrosion, drain configuration, dishwasher connections and electrical condition can change the job. A replacement that differs substantially from the old unit may require connection changes.
Water damage or a leaking drain should be evaluated on its own merits. Installing a new disposal without correcting a failed connection can leave the original problem unresolved.
What to Send With Your Request
- Photos of the disposal and full under-sink plumbing.
- Brand/model of the existing and replacement unit when known.
- A description of the symptom and when it occurs.
- Photos showing the power cord/outlet or hardwired connection and any visible leak.
If the unit stopped suddenly, mention whether it hums, trips a breaker, leaks or is completely silent. Those details help distinguish mechanical, plumbing and electrical possibilities.
Common Questions
Does a leaking disposal always need replacement?
Not necessarily. The leak may come from the sink flange, a drain connection, dishwasher connection or the disposal body. The source needs to be identified before deciding between repair and replacement.
Can a different-size disposal replace the old one?
Sometimes, but clearance, mounting, drain alignment and power arrangements need to be checked. Send both model numbers and under-sink photos before assuming it will be a direct swap.
