Paver patios and walkways are part of Hardscape, Concrete & Pavers. For poured surfaces, see concrete patios and flatwork; for supporting grade changes, compare retaining walls.
What Paver Patios & Walkways Covers
Paver work can create or repair patios, walkways and other defined pedestrian surfaces using a modular paving system. Base preparation, edge restraint, grade and drainage are as important as the visible paver pattern.
Sunken, spreading or uneven pavers can indicate base or edge problems. Resetting only the visible units may not be enough when the supporting condition has failed.
Before the Work
Photograph the full surface, edges, transitions and nearby drainage. Measure the approximate footprint and show steps, doors or other fixed elevations.
For repair, mark the areas that have settled or moved. If matching existing pavers, provide close-up photos and any product information available.
What Can Change the Scope
Excavation, base condition, slope, drainage, edge restraint, paver size, pattern and access for materials can change the work.
Matching discontinued pavers or correcting a failed base can make a repair more extensive than simply resetting a few units.
Laying the Surface and Reviewing the Result
For a new paver area, agree the pattern, border and meeting points with fixed surfaces before the field of pavers is laid. The chosen system determines the preparation, bedding, edge restraint and joint treatment. For a settled area, the repair plan should identify which units are lifted and what supporting condition is corrected before they are relaid. Review the completed pattern, edges and transitions, along with any rocking units or unresolved drainage concern. Keep the selected product’s care and use guidance with the project record, including any requirements for the joint material.
What to Send With Your Request
- Wide photos of the entire patio or walkway.
- Approximate dimensions.
- Close-ups of settlement, gaps or damaged pavers.
- Preferred paver product or photos of existing units.
Show where the pavers meet doors, concrete, decks or landscape beds so transition heights can be planned.
Common Questions
Can sunken pavers just be lifted and reset?
Sometimes, but the base and drainage should be considered so the same area does not settle again.
Can a small repair match older pavers?
It depends on product availability and weathering. Close-up photos and spare material, if available, help assess a reasonable match.
